Mathers Swing Bridge Rehabilitation

Maters Swing Bridge is located in the Melbourne/Cocoa of Florida. It is a 700 ft., low level bridge with a 202' swing span length. PCL Civil Constructors, Inc. widened the entire deck to the north 2'.  PCL removed the entire steel swing span, concrete pivot pier and timber piling, and replaced with a 24" concrete piling, a new pivot pier, new machinery and a new steel span. The scope of work included:

• Deck widening
• Demolition of barrier and curb  
• Replacement of barrier, curb and aluminum rail
• Renovation of the control house
• Widening of the swing span rest bents
• Miscellaneous changes to gates, overhead signs, etc.

Project Fact:  This bridge is one of only 9 swing bridges left in Florida.  Mathers Swing Bridge Replacement was also the first complete replacement of a swing span in Florida in over 50 years.  In addition, the control house had major renovations and new construction.  The project was a huge partnering success with a very positive letter of recommendation from the owner.
