Project Description
The last cubic yard of concrete for the 3,000 bridge segments that go into the construction of the five miles of segmental bridges, which make up the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway, was poured at approximately 12:30 p.m. on February 10, 2005. This marks the completion of 2 years of work to precast the 5 miles of bridge. During that time the casting yard employed close to 150 workers and placed over 120,000 cubic yards of concrete to cast 3032 segments. With the completion of this work crews will move on to pier remediation and segment erection activities. The unusual precast shapes set new challenges for the casting yard. Florida's new guidelines for segmental bridge construction have added new items of work. The biggest challenge is constructing five miles of a 60' wide precast bridge within a 40' wide median on an active expressway. On Thursday, February 25, 2005 the Crosstown Expressway project hit another milestone. The east bound lanes were open to traffic at approximately 3:00pm. East bound lanes on the new ASSHTO Girder bridges (phase 1) were opened from 26th Street to east of 39th Street. Gary Dale's roadway team has only one more bridge to build and redeck one other.
