SRP/Granite Reef Dam Secondary Stilling Basin & Cut-Off Wall

Concrete Pouring

Location:

Phoenix, AZ

Built By:

PCL Civil Constructors, Inc.
Project Description

Construction of a cut-off wall in a de-watered work area by excavating, forming and placing conventional 5000 psi ready-mix concrete in two lifts consisting of a three foot deep footing followed by an an eighteen foot wall placement.  Vertical construction joints for the wall were on 20 ft. spacing as required.  Once construction was complete, the wall area was backfilled with native, previously excavated material utilizing alternate lifts on each side of the wall so as not to impose a lateral load on the wall.

On 1/12/02 PCL Civil SW District shattered it's own concrete placement record by placing 5,050 CY of conventional concrete in a single 11 hour shirt at the Granite Reef Diversion Dam Project. This low slump, mass concrete placement started at 3:30 a.m. and finished with the last concrete truck unloaded at 2:30 p.m.  Placement of the mass concrete was performed by three Putzmeister 105 belt Conveyors and three separate placing crews, armed with high cycle vibrators.  PCL's ready-mix supplier, Chandler Ready-Mix, had three batch plants and over 90 mixer trucks dedicated to PCL's operation.  At the end of the day, we achieved an average productivity of 16.6 CY/manhour compared to our budget of 8.0 CY/manhour.
